About us

Star Hostel is an avant-garde street paper published by the Oltalom Charity Society. The Paper was established to provide a fresh way of helping homeless people. Selling the paper not only provides work for them but gives them a sense a worth and an opportunity to be accepted.  Distributors of the paper are helped by social workers so that - unlike from other street papers – selling would be free from dependence and can be formed into a partnership where the distributor offers real cultural values to the reader. Buying the paper makes the reader a buyer since for money he or she gets a reading of high level exceeding its price.

The name Star Hostel comes from a street jargon: occupants of the star hostel are those who spend their night under the open sky.

The sellers work in an apron with the logo of the Star Hostel and the help of social workers. The paper costs 200 HUF and half of the amount goes to the sellers. The paper is sold in four pedestrian underpasses in Budapest – Astoria, Ferenciek Square, Deák Square and Kálvin Square – weekdays between 3 and 7 p.m. In the past few months several other homeless shelters joined into the distribution. In order to introduce the paper to as many as possible we are open to alternative distribution forms: it is possible to subscribe and get it in some bookstores and coffee houses.

The paper comes out monthly and in its thematic issues the literary, journalistic and sociographic writings go round questions of life importance as homelessness, psyche, prostitution, being outlawed. Also adapt such determining experiences as children, hospital, school, sacrifice and festivals. These questions have important messages for all of us, but college and university student can use it as a professional source.

The other important goal of the paper is to present and engage contemporary writers, poets and artists.  In our country it became the privilege of a few to read literature; many have no access to unambiguous contemporary literature of high level. The Star Hostel avant-garde street paper helps contemporary writers and readers to find each other.

The published issues reflect our ambition to bring out unknown, known and well-known authors. The literature column of the paper always starts with a short story connected to the theme of the month written by a classical author like Géza Gárdonyi, Endre Gelléri Andor, Péter Hajnóczy, Frigyes Karinthy, Ferenc Móra, Zsigmond Móricz. These are followed by writings (novel details, short stories, poems) of contemporary authors.  In our Stardust column the reader can find feuilletons and essays; in Star space there are sociographies, reports and social information can be found. Our paper closes with the Little Star column with tales, recommendations, and poems for children.

Among others our authors are Krisztina Bíró, András Cserna-Szabó, Márton Csillag, Mátyás Dunajcsik, Dóra Esze, Tamás Jónás, Orsolya Karafiáth, Tibor Legát, Ádám Mestyán, Gergely Mézes, Orsolya Péntek, Gergely Péterfy, Tamás Schüttler, Zsuzsa Tamás and Miklós Vámos.
The paper is spirited by works of contemporary artists and photographers.

Star Hostel celebrates its 2nd birthday on the 11th of November 2008 at the Hole (Gödör Club) where monumental fine arts exhibition, literature evening and a concert will be held worth remembering.
